Shopify Editions Fall '26: Every Major Update, Explained, and What It Really Means for Merchants and App Developers

Shopify Editions Fall '26: Every Major Update, Explained, and What It Really Means for Merchants and App Developers

The major Shopify Fall '26 updates, explained for merchants and app developers: agentic commerce, Sidekick, checkout, Shop, security and the changing app ecosystem.

By Yuvraj Kewate · 2026-10-29

Shopify's Fall '26 Edition is out, under the tagline “Everything new for non-linear growth.” Its official Editions page lists updates across agentic commerce, Sidekick, the online store, retail, payments, operations, Shop, marketing, fulfillment, and developer tools.

Most recap posts will list them. That is not very useful. A list of features does not tell you what to do on Monday.

So this post does two things. For each area, it covers the updates that actually matter, in plain language. Then it adds our take: what we think Shopify is signalling, who wins, who should be worried, and what you should do about it. I have spent over a decade in the Shopify ecosystem, I build and run Shopify apps, and I talk to app founders and merchants every week. The takes below come from that seat.

One note on accuracy. Everything in the “what's new” sections comes from Shopify's own Editions page. Shopify does not give release dates for most items, and many are marked “coming soon,” “rolling out soon,” or “early access.” I have called those out where the page does. Everything labelled “our take” or “what we infer” is our opinion and reading of the direction, not something Shopify has said.

The Big Picture in 60 Seconds

If you only read one section, read this one.

  • Shopify is building the checkout layer for AI shopping. Shop skills for ChatGPT and Claude, Shop Pay in named personal agents, and Shopify-powered checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini. Your products are increasingly being bought somewhere other than your storefront. Availability varies by integration.
  • Sidekick is becoming an operator, not a chatbot. It now runs multi-step plans, tests changes before you apply them, writes code, and suggests prices.
  • Shop is turning into a marketplace. Universal multi-brand checkout, interest feeds, personalized search, and a delivery badge that affects ranking. That is our reading of the direction.
  • Security got real. The Edition describes deprecation of app creation or updating of script tags, IP allowlists, and trust-checked reviews. These changes matter in the context of October's checkout hijacks, although the Editions page does not establish that the incidents caused them.
  • Shopify is pulling more of the app economy in-house. Shopify Protect for fraud and chargebacks, automated policies, rollouts and scheduling, WhatsApp recovery, custom checkout fields, and Black Friday email series. Several app categories have new native overlap, including capabilities still rolling out.
  • App billing and partner economics are being centralised. Shopify App Pricing, a migration tool off the Billing API, private plans, localized pricing, app ads, and four years of partner earnings on merchants you refer.

Now the detail.

1. Agentic Commerce: Your Store Is No Longer the Only Storefront

What's new

  • Shop skill for any agent: ChatGPT, Claude, and other agents can discover products, give recommendations, and check out with Shop Pay.
  • Shop Pay in personal agents and more agents: Checkout inside Claude Duet, Grok Bot, Instinct, and Meta's Muse. Shopify describes Mastercard and Visa support for Claude Duet, Grok Bot, and Instinct, with Amex “soon.”
  • Selling in Google Search and Gemini: Sell in AI Mode and the Gemini app with Shopify-powered checkout, with orders managed in your admin.
  • Compare-at prices for AI agents: Shopify Catalog shares your markdowns with shopping agents automatically.
  • Catalog eligibility check: See whether your store qualifies for Shopify Catalog and what to fix.
  • Business details in AI channels: Review and approve the policies and FAQs that agents use when answering about your store.
  • Store connectors: Run your store from Grok, Gemini, Meta Muse, and a Microsoft Copilot plugin alongside Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Canvas in AI agents: Design your store inside ChatGPT, Claude, and other agents.
  • Store preview in agents: Build a store with Shopify CLI before you even sign up.
  • Retail location discovery: Agents can find your physical stores and send shoppers to the nearest one.

Our take

This is the most important section of the whole Edition, and most merchants will skim past it.

For years, the playbook was simple: get traffic to your store, convert it there. Shopify is now building for a world where a big share of discovery and checkout happens inside an AI assistant. The shopper never visits your homepage. They ask an agent, the agent pulls from Shopify Catalog, and checkout closes the sale in the chat.

Shopify wants to be the default checkout and product database for every major agent. Look at the partner list: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI, Meta, Microsoft. That is not a single bet. It is Shopify making sure it wins no matter which assistant shoppers end up using.

What we infer

  • Product data is the new SEO. If agents are reading your catalog, your titles, descriptions, variants, compare-at prices, and policies become important discovery inputs. Messy product data can make you harder to find.
  • The Catalog eligibility check is the most underrated feature in this Edition. Run it. If you do not qualify, you may be missing an emerging channel.
  • Approve your AI business details now. Agents will answer questions about your returns and shipping whether you like it or not. Make sure they are reading the version you approved.
  • Brand gets harder. When the agent is the interface, your theme matters less in that moment. Your differentiation shifts to product, price, reviews, delivery promise, and post-purchase experience.

What to do: Run the Catalog eligibility check, clean up product data on your top 50 products, review the business details shared with AI channels, and make sure compare-at prices are accurate.

2. Sidekick: From Assistant to Operator

What's new

  • Technical tasks: Multi-step workflows, batch changes, computation, coding, and web search, with memory of context. Shopify says daily Sidekick sessions are up 4.2x year over year.
  • Tested recommendations: Sidekick runs proposed changes through SimGym, Shopify's shopper simulation, before you apply them.
  • Approve-once plans: Approve a plan and Sidekick makes many changes, such as rewriting every product description in a collection.
  • Guidance that considers your apps and industry research.
  • Floating chat on every admin page in the redesigned admin.
  • Draft order help, print-on-demand design, pricing recommendations powered by Shopify Smart Pricing, and payments questions like why a payout was lower or what is driving chargebacks.
  • Checkout and customer account customizations with Sidekick and the Checkout Blocks app.
  • Markdown theme files that teach Sidekick your theme structure and design preferences.

Our take

A year ago, Sidekick answered questions. Now it plans, tests, and executes. The SimGym piece is the tell: Shopify is not just suggesting changes, it is simulating shoppers to check whether a change helps before you ship it. That is the start of a store that tunes itself.

The 4.2x growth in daily sessions tells you usage is increasing, which means Shopify will keep pushing more work into it. It is Shopify's session metric, not a count of unique merchants or proof of better business outcomes.

What we infer

  • Sidekick is the new app store front door. When a merchant asks Sidekick “how do I recover abandoned carts?”, the answer may increasingly be a native feature, not an app recommendation. App founders should assume Sidekick will try to solve the job before an app gets a look.
  • Small, single-task apps are most exposed. Bulk editors, description writers, simple pricing tools, and basic POD mockup tools now compete with an assistant that lives in the admin.
  • Approve-once plans need guardrails. Rewriting every description in a collection in one click is powerful and risky. Merchants should review plans carefully, especially on SEO-sensitive pages.
  • Markdown theme files are a quiet win for theme developers and agencies. Documenting a theme so Sidekick understands it will become part of good theme delivery.

What to do (merchants): Use Sidekick for the boring bulk work, but read every plan before approving it.

What to do (app founders): Ask yourself honestly whether Sidekick could do your app's core job in 12 months. If yes, move up the value chain now.

3. Online Store: Canvas, Rollouts, and a Storefront Agent

What's new

  • Whole-store Canvas view: Design the full store in one view with Sidekick. Shopify says it is 20% faster from no theme to a launched store.
  • Smarter storefront agent: A shopper chat that recommends products, helps with checkout, and hands off to staff through Shopify Inbox. Shopify reports shoppers signed in with Shop convert up to 1.5x higher in these chats.
  • Shop sign-in everywhere: For non-Shopify businesses, in lead capture forms via Shopify Forms or Klaviyo, and soon with custom forms after first sign-in.
  • Rollouts: Schedule launches, events, or experiments that bundle theme, checkout, catalog, and discount changes, including across headless, POS, Google Shopping, and Shop, with automatic rollback when promotions end.
  • SimGym shopping goals: Set a goal for a simulation and get placement recommendations.
  • Better predictive search: Shopify reports add-to-carts from search up 8%.
  • Right-to-left languages: Arabic, Hebrew, and Urdu, reaching 600M+ readers.
  • Translation sync with Translate & Adapt, and B2B search via Algolia with customer-specific catalogs and pricing.

Our take

Rollouts is the sleeper hit here. Coordinating a sale used to mean changing the theme, updating prices, publishing a collection, turning on a discount, and hoping you remember to undo it all on Monday. Rollouts bundles it, schedules it, and rolls it back. For any brand that runs regular drops or BFCM, that is hours saved and fewer mistakes.

Shop sign-in in lead capture forms is also bigger than it looks. Shopify is pushing to identify shoppers earlier, before checkout, because an identified shopper converts better everywhere: in chat, on site, in POS, and in agents.

What we infer

  • Scheduling and A/B testing apps face pressure. Native rollouts with A/B tests across channels cover a lot of what merchants pay third-party tools for.
  • Shop sign-in is becoming Shopify's identity layer. Expect more features to work better, or only, for Shop-signed-in customers. Merchants should start encouraging Shop sign-in now.
  • Right-to-left support opens real markets. If you sell into the Gulf or Israel, this removes a long-standing workaround.

4. Merchandising

What's new

  • Channel-specific product data mapping: Different product data per channel, kept in sync.
  • Multi-source collections: Combine products, apps, or variants into one reusable collection.
  • Variants edited on the product page with bulk variant controls.
  • Market-based pricing guidance from Smart Pricing.
  • Up to 20 barcodes per variant, scannable in POS.
  • URL-based digital products like templates and booking links, plus an improved Digital Products app.
  • Market cart preview (coming soon) and Collective catalog analytics.

Our take

Channel-specific product data mapping connects directly to the agentic push. Shopify is letting you shape how your product looks on each channel, including AI channels, without duplicating products. Combine that with Catalog and you have the tools to optimise for agents specifically.

URL-based digital products is a small change that opens Shopify to a lot of creators and service businesses who sell access, not files.

5. Retail and POS

What's new

  • Expanded in-store customer recognition from the Shopify Payments network. Known in-store customers have 60%+ higher lifetime value, per Shopify.
  • Faster checkout for cash and split payments.
  • Abandoned online cart pickup: Staff can load a known customer's online cart in POS.
  • Shared recent carts across devices, persistent mobile cart, and local delivery managed in POS.
  • POS device management, connectivity status, scheduled stock counts, and an activity log of refunds, discounts, and drawer opens by staff.
  • Sales attributed to associates for coaching, bulk staff management by CSV, and organization-level roles on Shopify Plus.
  • Local in-store payments: Alipay, WeChat Pay, Satispay, Scalapay, GrabPay, plus Cartes Bancaires in France.

Our take

The theme is one customer across every channel. A shopper abandons a cart online, walks into your store, and the associate can pull it up. That is the kind of experience only a platform that owns online, POS, and payments can deliver, and it is where Shopify is hardest to compete with.

The operational features (device management, activity logs, scheduled counts) are less exciting but they are what multi-location retailers have been asking for. Shopify is clearly chasing bigger retail accounts.

6. Payments, Checkout, and Fraud

What's new

Shopify Protect app: features rolling out soon

  • Automatic blocking of high-risk checkouts before authorization.
  • Risk factor explanations on orders and payment risk reports.
  • AI-written chargeback responses tailored to the bank and reason code.
  • Automatic carrier proof of delivery on “didn't arrive” disputes.
  • Custom risk rules you can backtest, with drift alerts.
  • Chargeback protection extended beyond Shop Pay (coming soon).
  • Shopify cites 60% more “product not received” disputes won and 12K+ high-risk payments blocked per minute.

Tax, international, and payouts

  • Managed sales tax for newer US merchants.
  • Managed Markets pricing with all-in duties, taxes, and flat-rate shipping, which Shopify says lifts international conversion by 50%.
  • Shop Pay alongside your existing payment provider, and Shop Pay for multi-entity and non-Shopify businesses.
  • Multi-currency payouts in Australia, France, Singapore, and Hong Kong (Advanced and Plus).
  • Pre-tax HSA/FSA funds in Shop Pay (coming soon, US).
  • Shop Pay Installments in Australia (early access).

Checkout

  • Custom checkout fields for delivery notes and gift messages (rolling out soon).
  • Tiled payment layout, stacked form, and a thank-you page celebration (rolling out or coming soon).
  • Per-market fees by product or collection (early access).
  • Apple Pay via QR code in Chrome, Edge, and Firefox (coming soon).

Our take

Shopify Protect is the headline for the app ecosystem. Fraud screening and chargeback management have been a healthy third-party category for years. Shopify now describes native fraud blocking, AI dispute responses, custom rules, and chargeback protection, inside the platform that already processes the payment and holds the delivery data. As those capabilities roll out, that is a very hard position to compete against on price or convenience.

Shop Pay alongside existing providers is a smart wedge. Big merchants who will not switch payment processors can still add Shop Pay. Once it is there, more of the checkout flows through Shopify's identity and data.

What we infer

  • Fraud and chargeback apps need a new angle. Pure screening and dispute filing face native competition. The opportunity left is cross-platform merchants, specialised verticals, and deeper analytics.
  • Checkout field apps lose their simplest use case. Gift messages and delivery instructions were the bread and butter of many checkout customisation apps.
  • Managed Markets plus per-market fees signals Shopify wants to own cross-border end to end. If you sell internationally and are not using Managed Markets, test it.

7. Operations, Admin, Analytics, and Flow

What's new

  • Refreshed admin with new navigation and Sidekick everywhere (rolling out soon).
  • Filterable activity log attributing changes to staff, apps, or services (coming soon).
  • Passkeys for sign-in.
  • Automated store policies generated and kept in sync.
  • Inline metafield editing anywhere in admin, and file folders.
  • Analytics: App events in reports, annotations, metafield and metaobject grouping, purchase order analytics, geospatial maps, and more accurate sessions with bot filtering and consent-aware counting.
  • Flow: Triggers on field changes (price, tag, metafield), permissions, version history, and a Flow AI Toolkit for building automations with your agent.
  • App extension status monitoring in app settings (coming soon).
  • Seller health status checklist, 13 new admin languages, a faster native mobile app, Shopify Balance wires, and Shopify Credit to QuickBooks sync.

Our take

Two quiet changes here matter more than they look.

The coming activity log shows which app changed what. After October's app security incidents, that is exactly what merchants need. When it becomes available, if an app edits your store, you will be able to see it.

Sessions are getting more accurate. Bot filtering and consent-aware counting means your session numbers may drop. If your conversion rate suddenly jumps, check whether sessions went down before you celebrate. Agencies should warn clients before this lands.

Automated store policies will hit policy generator apps directly.

8. Shop: The Marketplace Shopify Will Not Call a Marketplace

What's new

  • Universal checkout: Add products from multiple brands to one cart and check out in one tap.
  • Interest feeds, personalized search ranking, and new search filters by size, price, color, and brand.
  • Shop agent expanding to more markets.
  • Instagram sync that turns Reels and carousels into shoppable content.
  • Cart sync across devices and between Shop and your store.
  • Discount codes saved in Shop accounts.
  • Branding sync to a Shop landing page (early access).

Our take

Multi-brand cart, interest feeds, personalised ranking, filters by attribute. That is a marketplace. Shopify has always avoided that word because it wants merchants to own their customers. But Shop is now a real destination where shoppers browse across brands and buy in one cart.

What we infer

  • Ranking in Shop is now worth optimising for. Combine this with the Shop Promise badge (below), which boosts search ranking in Shop and Catalog. Delivery speed and returns policy are now discovery factors.
  • Instagram sync lowers the effort to get content into Shop. If you post Reels, connect it.
  • Merchants should think about Shop the way they think about Amazon, with one big difference: The customer relationship and checkout still run through your Shopify store.

9. Marketing

What's new

  • Campaign Autopilot expanded to Microsoft Advertising and Snapchat, with X Ads coming soon, plus SEO.
  • Shop Campaigns in 35+ markets, pay only when an ad drives a sale, with 18M+ sales driven so far and full metrics in ShopifyQL.
  • Unified marketing reports with clearer attribution.
  • WhatsApp consent at checkout and automated WhatsApp messages for browse, cart, and checkout abandonment.
  • Pre-built Black Friday email series to customise, approve, and schedule.
  • TikTok Buy Direct ads for select businesses, and a ChatGPT Ads app for sponsored placements in chat.

Our take

ChatGPT Ads, tracked in your Shopify admin, is a milestone. The Edition describes paid placements inside AI chats as a channel merchants can explore. It is early, and availability and economics need checking before treating it as an established acquisition channel.

Native WhatsApp recovery is a big deal for markets like India, Brazil, Indonesia, and the Middle East, where WhatsApp is widely used. It also puts pressure on WhatsApp marketing apps, at least for the basic abandonment flows.

Shop Campaigns' pay-per-sale model across 35+ markets is worth testing for eligible small merchants. Check the terms and economics for your business first.

10. Fulfillment, Returns, and Order Editing

What's new

  • Shop Promise badge that boosts search ranking in Shop and Catalog, with eligibility up 20x.
  • Carrier expansions: DHL Express in the UK, France, Italy, Germany, and Spain. Royal Mail pickup points. DHL eCommerce labels in the Netherlands and Poland. UPS international from Canada. Canada Post return labels billed only when scanned. FedEx delivery photos.
  • Variant package dimensions, native stock counts, admin barcode scanning, transfer metafields.
  • Market-based return rules and return window overrides by product or collection.
  • Add discounts to existing orders with automatic recalculation.
  • Subscriptions on draft orders, balance write-offs, and tax recalculation on address edits.
  • Shopify reports shipping 27.1B products over 5.8T miles in 2025.

Our take

Shop Promise moving from a nice badge to a ranking factor is the takeaway. Delivery and returns are now part of how agents and Shop decide what to show. Fast, reliable fulfillment is becoming a marketing advantage, not just an operations metric.

The order editing changes are worth calling out because they show how Shopify is expanding its native post-purchase capabilities. Adding discounts to existing orders and recalculating tax on address edits make it easier for merchants to handle changes after checkout. For third-party order editing apps, this raises the baseline. The opportunity is to go beyond basic edits with self-serve customer experiences, cancellation prevention, upsells during the edit window, and more advanced post-purchase workflows.

11. Developers and App Founders: The Section That Changes the Most

This is where the Edition gets serious for anyone building on Shopify.

Agentic tooling

  • One MCP for shopping: Shoppers sign in, search Shopify Catalog, and pay with Shop Pay in any app or agent.
  • WebMCP tools: Stores register structured tools for search, carts, and checkout.
  • Catalog API: Filters for 3D models and video, sale prices and safety warnings, products from businesses off Shopify (beta), and personalised search.
  • Shop Campaigns commissions: Earn the business-set commission plus 0.3% from Shopify on Catalog API sales (early access).
  • UCP endpoints: /buy checkout permalinks, an /ask endpoint grounded in business-published facts, and retail locations.
  • Checkout Kit v4 for web, native, and agentic experiences, plus Shop Pay in any app.

Platform primitives

  • App events in analytics, UI extension event logging, and analytics annotations via GraphQL.
  • 14 new Polaris component APIs on the Polaris CDN, with semantic versioning.
  • POS Printing API, POS background extensions, and a POS Storage API (2026-10 release candidate).
  • Purchase order API, Rollouts API, return shipping tax fields, and delivery option metafields.
  • Granular consent scopes and one-tap Shop sign-in for apps (wishlists, favourites, reviews).
  • Metaobjects in Functions (coming soon).
  • Python and PHP packages for building apps.

Tooling and money

  • Refreshed Dev Dashboard with apps, stores, billing, and payouts in one place, and soon listings, pricing, and app ads.
  • Agent-driven app management and dev stores via Shopify CLI.
  • 18 new event topics across products, orders, customers, and inventory.
  • App Pricing migration tool to move off the Billing API to Shopify App Pricing.
  • Partner earnings: Subscription and GMV revenue on merchants you bring to Shopify, for four years.
  • Unlimited private plans for enterprise deals, localized app pricing by market, annual plans with usage charges (coming soon), and plan capability requirements.
  • Theme Store app add-ons: Attach an app to a theme listing.

Secure ecosystem

  • App security checks with the AI Toolkit.
  • Script tag deprecation: The Edition says apps can no longer create or update script tags and must move to theme app extensions or web pixels. This is not a claim that every existing script tag has stopped working.
  • IP allowlists: Restrict API calls by IP, per app.
  • Unique, recognisable app names required.
  • Trust-checked app reviews against shop trust, identity, and app activity.
  • Partner details on collaborator requests.
  • Expiring tokens: consult Shopify's expiring offline access token migration guide for the applicable requirements.

Our take

Three things stand out.

  1. Script tag deprecation is the biggest breaking change in this Edition. Script tags are how many older apps inject code into storefronts. October 2026 checkout hijacks showed the risks of app-delivered scripts sending shoppers to fake checkouts. The Edition does not say those incidents caused the change, but the overlap matters. Combined with IP allowlists and expiring tokens, these controls address important attack paths. The Editions entry does not give a migration deadline. Do not wait for one. If your app still uses script tags, evaluate theme app extensions or web pixels as appropriate for its job. For the full background, read our Shopify app security update 2026 guide and the October checkout hijacking timeline.
  2. Shopify is centralising app monetisation. App Pricing, a migration tool off the Billing API, private plans, localised prices, annual plus usage billing, and app ads inside the Dev Dashboard. Our reading is that Shopify wants more of pricing display, billing, and paid discovery for apps in one place. That makes life simpler for founders, and it also gives Shopify more control over how apps are found and paid for. App ads in the Dev Dashboard suggest the App Store's paid placements may get more competitive.
  3. Agentic distribution is opening to developers. The 0.3% Shopify commission on Catalog API sales, on top of the merchant's commission, is an incentive for developers to build shopping experiences on top of Shopify's catalog. That is a new business model: you do not need to sell software to merchants. You can build a shopping agent or app and earn on the sales it drives, subject to eligibility and early-access terms.

What we infer

  • Trust-checked reviews could reshuffle rankings. Apps that grew on incentivised or low-quality reviews may see counts and positions change. Honest reviews from active merchants may count for more.
  • Four-year partner earnings is a strong pull for agencies. Agencies that bring merchants onto Shopify can share in subscription and GMV revenue for four years under the program's terms. Expect more agencies to push migrations harder, and more partner programs built around referrals.
  • PHP and Python packages lower the barrier to building apps. Given the PHP2Shell vulnerabilities disclosed in October, PHP app builders should keep their runtimes patched. Our PHP2Shell patch guide for Shopify app developers covers what to do.
  • App events in analytics is a retention opportunity. If your app's events show up in the merchant's own Shopify reports, your value becomes visible where they already look. Apps that integrate this well will be harder to uninstall.

What to do (app founders), in order:

  1. Audit for script tags and start planning the appropriate migration to theme app extensions or web pixels.
  2. Run shopify app security check and migrate to expiring tokens.
  3. Plan the move to Shopify App Pricing using the migration tool.
  4. Send your app's key events to Shopify analytics.
  5. Look at whether your app's job is now covered by Sidekick or a native feature, and adjust your positioning.

For a practical security review, use our founder security checklist and the security reset before 2027.

Which App Categories Just Got a Native Competitor

This is the question every app founder is asking. Based on this Edition, here is where Shopify now offers or describes something native that overlaps with third-party apps. Overlap does not mean an app category is dead. Native features usually cover the basics, and good apps win on depth, workflow, and support. Several capabilities are still coming soon or rolling out.

CategoryNew native overlap
Fraud and chargebacksShopify Protect: auto-blocking, AI dispute responses, custom rules, chargeback protection
Store policiesAutomated store policies
Scheduling and A/B testingRollouts across theme, checkout, catalog, discounts, and channels
Checkout fieldsNative custom checkout fields
WhatsApp recoveryNative WhatsApp consent and abandonment messages
Seasonal emailPre-built Black Friday email series
Bulk editing and AI copySidekick approve-once plans
Pricing toolsSmart Pricing recommendations
Translation workflowsTranslation sync via Translate & Adapt
Order editing basicsAdd discounts to existing orders, tax recalculation on edits
Stock countsNative and scheduled stock counts

Our take: If your app sits in one of these rows, this Edition is your signal to go deeper, not wider. Specialise in a vertical, own a workflow end to end, integrate with Shopify's new primitives (rollouts, app events, Flow triggers), and make your support a reason to stay.

What Merchants Should Do After Fall '26

A short, practical list:

  1. Run the Shopify Catalog eligibility check and fix what it flags.
  2. Review and approve the business details shared with AI channels.
  3. Clean up product data on your best sellers: titles, descriptions, variants, compare-at prices.
  4. Get the Shop Promise badge if you can, because it now affects ranking.
  5. Encourage Shop sign-in across your store and forms.
  6. Use Rollouts for your next sale or BFCM campaign.
  7. Test Shop Campaigns with a small budget, since its model charges on attributed sales, subject to the program's terms.
  8. Turn on WhatsApp recovery if your customers use WhatsApp and you have the required consent.
  9. Check your session numbers once bot filtering lands, before comparing conversion rates.
  10. Audit your apps. With native features growing, you may be paying for something Shopify now handles. With the security changes, you also want to know which apps run code on your storefront.

Final Thoughts

“Non-linear growth” is Shopify's phrase, but the real story of Fall '26 is that the Shopify store is no longer one place. It is a product catalog that shows up inside AI assistants, a checkout that runs in other people's apps, a marketplace listing in Shop, and an admin that increasingly runs itself through Sidekick.

For merchants, that means the basics matter more than ever: clean product data, reliable delivery, clear policies, and a reason for customers to come back.

For app founders, it is a wake-up call and an opportunity at the same time. Shopify is taking over the simple jobs, tightening security controls, and centralising how apps get paid and discovered. The apps that win the next year will go deep on a real problem, build on Shopify's new primitives, and earn trust that a native feature cannot.

We will be covering the biggest changes in more depth over the coming weeks, especially script tag migration, Shopify App Pricing, and what agentic commerce means for app distribution.

Based on Shopify's Editions Fall '26 page, reviewed on October 29, 2026. Shopify does not list release dates for most features, and several are marked coming soon, rolling out, or early access. Check Shopify's changelog for availability in your region and plan. Everything labelled “our take” or “what we infer” is TheSaaSHub's opinion.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Shopify Editions Fall 2026?

It is Shopify's twice-yearly product release, presented under the tagline “Everything new for non-linear growth.” The Fall '26 page lists updates across agentic commerce, Sidekick, the online store, retail, payments, Shop, marketing, fulfillment, and developer tools.

What are the biggest updates in Shopify Editions Fall '26?

The biggest are Shop skills for AI agents; Shop Pay checkout in named personal agents; Shopify-powered checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini; Sidekick running and testing multi-step changes; universal multi-brand checkout in Shop; Shopify Protect's fraud and chargeback capabilities; Rollouts for scheduled launches; and, for developers, script tag deprecation, IP allowlists, and Shopify App Pricing. Availability differs by feature.

What does the script tag deprecation mean for app developers?

According to the Editions page, apps can no longer create or update script tags and must migrate to theme app extensions or web pixels as appropriate. The Editions entry does not give a deadline, so developers should start planning the migration now. This does not mean every existing script tag has already stopped working.

Is Shopify Protect free?

The Editions page describes Shopify Protect as an app with fraud blocking, AI chargeback responses, and custom rules, with features rolling out soon. It does not state pricing. Check the app listing and current terms before assuming it is free or that every feature is available.

Can I sell on ChatGPT with Shopify?

The Edition describes a Shop skill that lets ChatGPT, Claude, and other agents discover products and check out with Shop Pay, plus a ChatGPT Ads app for sponsored placements. Check the current integration's availability and your Shopify Catalog eligibility rather than assuming every store can use every capability immediately.

When will Fall '26 features be available?

Many features are available on announcement, but several are marked coming soon, rolling out soon, early access, or limited to certain regions or plans. Shopify's Editions page does not list exact dates for most items.
